On April 25, 2020, at the annual Dies academicus of the University of Zurich (UZH), Prof. Giorgio Noseda has been appointed honorary senator of the University in recognition of his tireless charitable work, which has shaped and will continue to shape cancer research in Switzerland. At UZH, each Faculty presents a distinguished researcher or professor with an honorary doctorate and, in addition, the status of “guest of honor” or “honorary senator” is granted in recognition of dedicated service to academia or the University.
Giorgio Noseda, an internal medicine physician and cardiologist, studied medicine at the Universities of Zurich and Paris and completed his training at the Universities of Zurich, London and Bern. He was Chief of internal medicine at the Mendrisio regional hospital and of Chief cardiologist at the Civic Hospital of Lugano. He is professor emeritus at the University of Bern.
In addition to his medical practice, Professor Noseda was instrumental in founding several organisations that are of great importance for cancer research in Switzerland. On the one hand, he founded the Administrative Center for Swiss Cancer Organizations (Haus der Krebsliga), the Swiss Cancer Research Foundation, that provides every year around CHF 20 million in research funding. Secondly, Giorgio Noseda was a co-founder of the umbrella organization “Oncosuisse”. In 1997, Prof. Noseda was a founding member of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB, affiliated to Università della Svizzera italiana), of which he was named Honorary President.
The work of Professor Noseda has earned him several prizes; among other things, he was named “Swiss of the Year” in 2007. Giorgio Noseda is linked to the University of Zurich not only as an alumnus, but also through the National Institute for Cancer Epidemiology and Registration (NICER), which he founded and that is located at UZH.
