The University of Zurich has decided to establish, as of 2020, the «Giorgio Noseda Chair for the epidemiology and treatment of cancer». For the first time in Switzerland, the risk factors, cancer-related diseases at the population level, early diagnosis and patient care will be the subject of cross-sectional researches. The Chair is established thanks to a donation of over 5 million francs granted by the “House of the Swiss Cancer League” foundation.
Giorgio Noseda, an internal medicine physician and cardiologist, studied medicine at the Universities of Zurich and Paris and completed his training at the Universities of Zurich, London and Bern. He was Chief of internal medicine at the Mendrisio regional hospital and of Chief cardiologist at the Civic Hospital of Lugano. He is professor emeritus at the University of Bern.
In addition to his medical profession, he dedicated himself to the fight against cancer. Among other things, he was president of the Swiss Cancer League. In 1996, he founded the Administrative Center for Swiss Cancer Organizations (Haus der Krebsliga) in Bern. He has helped to create several anti-cancer institutions including: the Swiss Cancer Research Foundation for Fundraising, the Oncosuisse Association, the umbrella organization of all the Swiss cancer institutions that develops every five years the National Fight Program against cancer to the attention of the Confederation and the Cantons, and the National Institute of Epidemiology and Cancer Registration (NICER, Zurich).
He has also chaired the Swiss Bridge Foundation, which raises funds for cancer research, of which he is Honorary President.
In 1997, Prof. Noseda was a founding member of the Institute for Research in Biomedicina (IRB), of which he was named Honorary President.
