Recent experimental investigations highlighted its important role in cancer metabolism and indicated it as a potential target for the development of new anticancer therapies.<\/p>\n<p>In the study entitled \u2018<em>How phosphorylation influences E1 subunit pyruvate dehydrogenase: A computational study<\/em>\u2019, published in <em>Scientific Reports<\/em>, a team of scientists led by Andrea Cavalli clarified by computational techniques how this enzyme is regulated by phosphorylation of specific serine residues.<\/p>\n<p>The results of this work improve the knowledge of the PDC functional mechanism and suggest new strategies of pharmacological intervention in both cancer and rare metabolic diseases.<\/p>\n<table align=\"left\" border=\"1\" cellpadding=\"1\" cellspacing=\"1\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"width:500px; margin-right: 20px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/images\/new_paper_cavalli_oct2018.jpg\" style=\"width: 500px; height: 356px; float: left;\"><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Structure of the E1 subunit of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC).
