Questo studio svela il meccanismo alla base di tale processo: il complesso MRX \u00e8 in grado di percepire l&#8217;estensione delle regioni telomeriche rivestite dalla proteina Rap1 legati al DNA telomerico e utilizza questa informazione per distinguere i telomeri corti da quelli lunghi.<\/p><p>Le regioni telomeriche pi\u00f9 estese, ricoperte da Rap1, agiscono come una barriera fisica che ostacola l\u2019attivit\u00e0 di MRX attraverso un impedimento sterico, piuttosto che mediante interazioni proteina-proteina dirette. In questo modo impediscono eventi dannosi di riparazione del DNA, come la fusione dei cromosomi e la resezione del DNA. Al contrario, i telomeri corti perdono questa protezione, consentendo a MRX di attivare le risposte al danno genomico.<\/p><p>Questi risultati rivelano un meccanismo semplice ma efficace con cui le cellule misurano la lunghezza dei telomeri e preservano la stabilit\u00e0 dei cromosomi. Lo studio offre nuove prospettive sulla regolazione dell\u2019omeostasi telomerica e sui processi che contribuiscono all\u2019invecchiamento cellulare e alla senescenza.<\/p><p>Giordano Reginato (IRB), Elda Cannav\u00f2 (IRB) e Stefano Mattaracci (Parigi) sono co-primi autori.
